Numbers over the years
There has been a steady decline in number of farms over the years for a range of reasons – aging farmers (average age is 60+ currently), labor costs, land costs and accessibility, etc. Small-scale farms make up the largest percentage of farms in Hawaii and the greatest opportunity to innovate towards healthier growing methods and entrepreneurial implementation of cottage industries.
